SPEAK Demo Report - Thursday 14th August
August 26, 2008 – 12:27 pmAround 25 dedicated compassionate Speak campaigners gathered outside the new animal torture laboratory to demonstrate their abhorrence for this monstrosity of a building where animals will have, and for all we know are already having, the most cruel and barbaric acts carried out on them
This week we were joined by a contingent from Cambridge, including Joan and Sue, and there was much exchanging of information. This week we were handing out new leaflets, and the Police were obviously intrigued as to what was in them, because one of them said that he was bored, and would like some reading material.
The ugly high hoarding around the building was still in place, even though there had been an accident two weeks ago, when a car approaching South Parks Road from Mansfield Road was in collision with a car heading towards Parks Road. The visibility here is nil, and considering “Health and Safety” is supposed to come before security, it is scandalous that this fence is allowed to remain. But then, this is Oxford University which considers itself beyond the law.
The support we had from members of the public was phenomenal, with motorists honking and hooting and giving us the thumbs up sign, and one motorist stopped to give us some money, which we unfortunately had to decline, but she said that she would send it to the Speak address. It seems that people are at last realising that animal testing is killing people on a grand scale, (it is the fourth biggest killer after cancer, heart disease and stroke), and EVEN COLIN BLAKEMORE IS NO LONGER USING LIVE ANIMALS!!
Incidentally the headlines in The Mail last Friday were “SKIN CREAM CANCER LINK”. BUT DON’T PANIC, IT’S ONLY ON MICE”. This just about says it all and sums up the uselessness of vivisection!!
For anybody who would like to join us on South Parks Road on a Thursday outside the laboratory, the time is 1.00 p.m. – 5.00 p.m. (This is the only day of the week we are allowed to protest directly outside the new animal testing laboratory).
